Behind the Scenes: How Ratio Variants Work (And Why They Aren't Guaranteed)

Black Dragon standing over a box of comic books

If you’ve been collecting comics for a while, you know there is nothing quite like the excitement of securing a rare ratio variant cover. Whether it’s a 1:25, 1:50, or a massive 1:100, these books are highly sought after.

Because of their rarity and the investment required to secure them, we want to pull back the curtain and share a look into how these books actually arrive at our shop—and explain why, despite our absolute best efforts, ratio variant pre-orders can never be 100% guaranteed.

They Travel Just Like Regular Covers

There is a common misconception that because ratio variants are rare, distributors treat them with special white-glove care during transit. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case.

Ratio variants travel in the exact same heavy cardboard boxes as standard regular covers. From time to time, a specific publisher might ship a ratio variant pre-bagged and boarded, but otherwise, they arrive stacked right alongside the rest of the weekly shipment.

Because they share the same boxes, they face the exact same real-world transit risks as standard $4.99 books:

  • Rough handling by shipping carriers

  • Corner dings, spine splits, and box crushes

  • Distributor packing shortages and human errors

What Happens When a Book Arrives Damaged or Shorted?

Every single week, our team meticulously inspects every incoming shipment. If a book is missing, or if it arrives in a condition that doesn't meet our quality standards, we immediately file an official OSD (Over, Short, and Damaged) Report with the distributor to request replacements.

With standard covers, getting a replacement is usually straightforward. With ratio variants, it is an entirely different story.

Because distributors only print a limited run of these variants, they rarely keep a massive back-stock of replacements sitting in their warehouses. Often, when we submit an OSD report for a damaged or shorted ratio variant, the distributor simply tells us, "We are out of stock." It is entirely out of our control.

The Law of Numbers: More Orders = More Risk

It sounds counterintuitive, but the more growing demand we have for ratio variants, the higher the statistical risk becomes.

To unlock a single 1:100 variant, a retailer has to order 100 copies of the main cover. That means huge quantities of boxes are moving through the shipping system. The larger the volume of books being shipped, the higher the mathematical probability of a distributor shortage or transit damage occurring somewhere along the line. When those supply chain issues hit a rare variant, it directly results in unavoidable pre-order cancellations and refunds.

Our Allocation Policy: First-Come, First-Served

We always want to be as fair as possible when distributor issues limit our stock.

All pre-orders on our store are tracked chronologically. If we order five copies of a variant, but the distributor only delivers three undamaged copies, those three books are automatically allocated to the customers who placed their pre-orders first.

If we are shorted and cannot fulfill your specific order, we don't hold onto your money or make you wait. We will proactively cancel that portion of your order and issue an immediate, full refund to your original payment method.

Thank You For Your Support

We love helping collectors chase down rare books, and we will never stop fighting to get every single copy we order into your hands. By sharing how the process works behind the scenes, we hope to build a more transparent community where expectations align with the realities of the comic distribution network.

Thank you for trusting us with your pull list, and happy collecting!
